Broken Back Rig
First off before we actually get into the rig I am going to describe lets talk a little about rig mechanics.

The job of all rigs or hooking systems is to hook the fish and preferably in the bottom lip.

Now, just by tying a knotless knot you have started this process.

Let’s now look at how a carp feeds, because from this you will understand the rigs used by specimen anglers far better.

Carp feed normally on or near the bottom of the dam or lake, sucking up food and ejecting the unwanted stuff. So we make rigs to suit that kind of operation.

A bait is attached to a hair, so it can be sucked up easily, the hook follows and is set to work the moment the carp ejects the bait, so we have covered the in and out part of the feeding., we use a knotless knot so the hook will turn downwards, so we have now covered the bottom lip part as well.

Although all are carp, the carp are different in each water we fish, some have small mouths, some soft mouths and some have big rubber mouths. This will depend a lot on the bottom of the water, be it silt or hard rock, and it will also influence how we try to hook the carp.

Sometimes we use the rig I am going to explain because the carp have large mouths and eject baits easily. This rig has anti eject qualities, so should account for more hook ups.

So let’s get down to work.

To start off you will need a wide gape short shank hook, silicon tubing, a soft hook link material or a coated braid, swivel.

I am going to be using a Fox arma, SSBP size 4 hook, with mantis dark 15lb coated braid. Fox silicon tubing, an ESP hi performance 45lb swivel.

The tools you will need are a pair of braid scissors, tension bar, a closed lip baiting needle and a ruler. The bait you want to present and a boilie stop.

So here we go, but a little safety hint before we start, I always use a small cork ball and put it on the hook point its saves a lot of pain.

Step 1.) measure 15cm onto the coated braid and remove the coating.

Step 2.) make a loop for the baiting needle, keep this loop small, use your close lipped needle to help with this knot.

Step 3.) measure 35cm and cut the coated braid off the roll.

Step 4.) cut a small piece of silicon tubing, thread the braid through the tubing, put the bait you want to present onto the hook link.

Step 5.) holding the braid and tubing in one hand put the point of the hook through the tubing, start the hook point facing yourself, or down.

Step 6.) Now the silicon tubing is on the hook, pull the hook link through the eye of the hook, until the hair with the bait on is the length, you want it.

Step 7.) Tie a knotless knot.

Step 8.) you now have a choice of to tie a loop or a swivel on the other end.

Step 9.) you have completed a “broken back” rig with anti eject qualities.

Step 10.) it should look something like the completed rig in the picture.

I hope this rig helps you land a few more carp, until the next time we chat in rig talk.
