Donaldson Dam
Donaldson Dam

Donaldson dam is situated on the Randfontein/Westonaria borders. Two dams on the premises called Top and Bottom lake that is ideally suited for the Specimen carp angler. Top lake is not open to the general public, and membership for this venue is on approval only and a rather steep annual fee is payable. Bottom lake is public waters and therefore also the focus of this article.
Bottom lake consists of 23 swims, with swims 1,2, 21, 22 and 23 being the most popular amongst specimen carp anglers.
The middle numbered swims, 6 - 11 have ample shade with the rest of the swims having very little to no shade. Ablutions are available on the premises with one ablution block being kept in rather good condition for anglers and campers. The rest of the ablutions along the shore are kept clean however but do not have bathing facilities. Electricity is available, however not on all the swims. With a very long extension lead electricity can be provided to swim 1 and 2, and a electricity point within 30m from swims 10 and 11 makes these two swims very popular for the family angler.
Although a informal settlement is situated on the opposite side of the lake, it is very safe, with security guards on constant patrol amongst the swims. The only thing entering the venue from the settlement is the music from the local shebeens during the night.
The main target species in Donaldson are Carp and Black bass but a few barber of fair size have also been caught there. Early November 2008 a 23Kg carp was caught at bottom lake and then a 22 was also reported towards the end of the same month. This was great news as for a very long period the biggest carp reported to have been caught in bottom lake was the mid 15' to low 18 Kg's.
As from January 2009 Donaldson lake is also part of the Anglershaven affiliate program, meaning that members and their dependants will receive a 10% discount at the venue.
