 The competition hosted at Voelvlei Dam in the Western Cape was an overnight competition which commenced 12h00 Saturday 30th – 12h00 Sunday 31st January. The gate was open from 8am-12pm, with registration between 8am – 10am. Competitors were not allowed to enter the angling zone at any stage prior to the competition.
The prizes where for the most fish caught based on a point system. Points were, 3 points Barbel, 2 points Carp and 1 point Tilapia. No other fish species would qualify.
The prizes were 1st prize R4000, 2nd prize R3000, 3rd prize R2000 and 4-6 prize R1000 each.
There were 44 teams with a maximum of 3 anglers per team. Approximately 150 people at the dam, including guests. Entry fee was R400 per team with an additional R20 gate fee per head, including guests. Each team was allocated 30m within to fish – this seems to be an acceptable space.
The number of fish caught amounted to 2342. A portion of the fish caught were taken by private dam owners to replenish their stock. The remainder of the fish were donated to an underprivileged non-European community in Sarel.

Weather-wise: Hot and windless in the mornings with quite a brisk wind in the afternoon up until about 7pm that evening, thereafter minimal wind throughout the night.
A good time was had by all, with anglers going home feeling “fished out”!!
We are planning another competition in a month or two time, hopefully at Brandvlei, so we would like to encourage all anglers (professional or social) to participate so that we can bring Western Cape up to the same level as Gauteng. We can only achieve this objective through active participation of all anglers.

P.S. I have heard that there are going to be approx 2million small mouth Bass released into Voelvlei soon.
